"a lovely pink card": The custom of sharing fancy illustrated calling (and other) cards was evidently popular. The cover illustration would often contain a choice expression, such as "Be joy forever near thee" or "Hope sustain thee ever." The latter phrase can be found inside this example from Montgomery's scrapbook. It was actually pasted vertically onto the page (Blue Scrapbook 16, Imagining Anne, p. 33).
